CAREY RICHARD DYKE

Son of Russell Halton Dyke and Eva Mae Sessions

Carey was born September 20, 1948, in Oakland, California. He met his new parents, Russell and Eva Dyke on December 8, 1948. As they held him in their arms, they knew he was the baby for them. He was very alert and very bright. They were told he passed his IQ test very high. They begged the adoption agency to let them take him home that day instead of the next day and they finally agreed that he could be taken home that after noon. Eva had knit the baby little outfits and she hurried home, picked a beautiful blue romper set, blue shawl, and waited patiently for the time to get him and bring him home. They took him to General Motors, where both Russell and Eva worked and showed him off. He was all eyes. Eva quit her job that day and wanted to be a real mom. After they left the office, Carey threw up. The excitement was too much for him. They drove to Eva's parents to show him off and Pearl and Cordon were delighted to have a grandson. Carey didn't have much hair so his eyes really showed big. He was named after Cordon and his Uncle Richard Dyke who had just been killed in an accident.

By the time he was 6 months old, he was a beautiful baby but he still kept throwing up until he started to walk. He never crawled but pushed himself like a frog and would lay on his stomach and kick one leg, thus the nickname he got when small, 'Thumper' after a movie bunny rabbit. He stood alone on his 10th month's birthday. His parents loved him dearly and it was a sad day for his mom and him when Russell departed. He had stayed long enough for the adoption papers to go through so that Eva would have her son.

His grandma Sessions worked with him, helping him put the US puzzle together until he knew each state. She read to him every day and taught him many things. Eva had to work and envied her mom as she so wanted to stay home and raise him.

When Cliff and Ray became part of the family, he had boys to live with and help him grow.

Carey could not say 'tr' together. On Halloween he would say "scrick or a screat". He had to take speech therapy and soon talked natural. He also had trouble riding a tricycle and a bike, but after never giving up he mastered that too. He loved to throw baseballs and would spend hours throwing the ball at the garage door

His front teeth were very wide and one of them came in sideways. Eva took him to an orthodontist who straightened it out but it killed the nerve and then growths were found in his gum. The doctor warned it might be cancer. He was only around 6 or 7 years old when surgery was performed. It was not cancer but they had to pull four permanent teeth in order for his teeth to be straight. They gave Eva pain pills, but Carey never used them. He could withstand pain. The braces on his teeth would cause his gums to bleed but he never once complained.

When he was four, he had to have allergy tests. Eva told him if he was allergic to the cat he may have to get rid of it. When he came back from the tests he looked at his mom and said, "I won't have to get ride of Twinkles." Eva said, "How do you know?" His reply, "I prayed to God and asked him to let me keep Twinkles." And HE did.

From the time Carey could walk, he loved music. By the time he was four he could take any record from over 100 they had and bring the one you asked him to bring. No one knows how he did it but he never made a mistake. He would kneel on a chair and watch the records go around for hours at a time until his legs gave out and he fell off the chair. When he was eight years old, his mom bought him a piano and he took lessons for years. His teacher said he could be a professional player. He played hard and fast with a lot of feeling in his playing. He always has music playing at his house. He loves all kinds.

Carey was good at writing stories. He was a good student and was awarded the Social Science award when he graduated from Castlemont High School. He also won a scholarship award from General Foods. He attended University of California at Davis for four years and got his degree in German and a minor in political science. He went to Cal Berkeley for extra credits in the German language. He was the only undergraduate but received the highest mark. His field of being a diplomat was not a good selection so he had to enter another field. He started working for the state of California, taking tests and advancing until he became a data computer programmer analysis and recently was made a data administrator for Oracle for the State of California. He loves his job, as it is challenging and he likes a challenge. He has never married and turned 50 this year, 1998. He has a beautiful home, red Mustang convertible, Harley Davidson motorcycle, plays baseball on two teams and made state champions several times. Bowled for many years, winning honors in that as well. He reads constantly, has many friends, including girlfriends but isn't ready to settle down.

His mom used to take him on trips throughout the US and up to Alaska. They went to visit his Grandparents in Arkansas and his father was there with his three children. The oldest girl, Paula, kept writing and sending him gifts through the years. After Russell died, Carey met his two sisters. They came to visit him and they really liked each other. Last year he went to Arkansas and met his brother and stepmother.

He has a good relationship with the girls and E-Mails almost every week with Cheryl. They have brought a great deal of happiness into his life.

Carey loves art, music, photography and travel to the desert and mountains. He has traveled to Greece several times and for college graduation his mom took him on a month's tour of Europe, Israel, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon. He's a great man with a lot of talent, friends and ability.

He received permission from Russell to be sealed in the temple to Mike Perakis and Eva as their child for time and eternity. This sealing has brought the greatest happiness to Eva because Carey means so much to her.

Carey always makes it home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. What a blessing this is to his mother. She thanks God every night for the wonderful son he gave to her.
