SAMUEL HARGROVE AND FAMILY

Logan and Butler Counties, KY.
By Helen Broadbent, Santaquin, UT

Samuel Hargrove first appears in Logan Co. records on 16 May 1799, as having 200 acres of land on Muddy River. He is listed as a taxpayer in 1800 in Logan Co. In 1810 Samuel is in Butler Co., age 45 and over. Listed with him are 1 male 16-26, 2 females 10-16, 3 females 1-26, 1 female 45 and over. In Butler Co. Court Records in 1814 he appears along with such names as Geo Neel, Henry Fluallen, Thos Warren, Enoch Berry, Joel Hargrove, Alexander Chapman and Joshua Hobbs, Senr. On 4 February 1814, Lot Arendell, John Depayster and Samuel appraised in current money the personal estate of Jacob Haws decd. Samuel bought from this estate one book for $ .50. James Hargrove (Hezekiah's son ?) buys one ax and fish gigg for $2.49. On 26 Feb. 1816, Samuel is listed as the Justice of the Peace.

Samuel Hargrove is in 1820 Butler Co. census, as age 45 and over.Listed with him are 1 male under 10-15, 1 female; 10-13, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 16-44, 1 female 45 and over.

He appears on the 1830 census as age 60-70. With him are 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 50-60 and 1 female 60-70.

On 6 Feb.1835, Samuel makes out his will and leaves "my worldly goods, as I have but little, to his beloved wife for her life-time and after her death to my two daughters, Lydia and Patsy Hargroves, for them to dispose of as they may think proper for the benefit of the younger part of the family, namely Edward Haws, Thomas Beary, Helena Beary and Eliza Sessions."

We see from Samuel's will that he definitely has the two daughters. Lydia Hargrove is in the 1850 Butler Census as age 63, b. NC. With her is Joel Berry, age 55, farmer, b. VA. Lydia is in the 1860 census as age 73, b. NC with Joel Berry, age 69, b. VA. Next to them is Martin Berry, age 39, wife Nancy and two children. Lydia is in the 1870 census as age 83, b. SC, with Joel Berry, age 78, b.VA.

On 10 Apr. 1819, Patsy Hargrove is witness to a deed of William and Benjamin Hawes to Lot and Reuben Arndell. I can find no other mention of Patsy in these counties.

From the wording of Samuel's will, "younger part of the family, and the marriages taking place in Logan, and then Butler Counties, when Samuel was there, perhaps the following are his children: Elizabeth Hargroves md. Martin Benson 15 Dec. 1806. Delila Hargrove md. Payton Brown 13 Oct. 1815, Clerimond Hargrove md. Joel Berry 21 Nov. 1816 and proven by Jeremiah Hargrove; Lettice Hargrove md Benjamin Haws 23 Feb. 1819; Jeremiah Hargrove md. Rebecca Haws 4 Oct. 1819. (Rebecca and Benjamin Haws' parents were Jacob Haws and Hannah Nail/Neill.) Thomas and Helena Beary mentioned in the will are Clerimond's children. In the 1850 Butler Co. Census, William Bunch and Helen and two children are with Joel Berry.

Edward Haws mentioned in the will is a son of Benjamin Haws and Lettice Hargrave. Lettice is probably dead when Benjamin marries Polly Whitcomb 24 May 1821 in White Co., Ill.

I cannot fit Eliza Sessions, mentioned in the will, into this family. Mary Hargrave/Solomon Sessions family is in Butler and Logan Counties at the time as Samuel, but the eleven Sessions children did not marry a Hargrave. However, from the wording of the will, there would seem to be a Hargrave daughter who married a Sessions. It is obvious that Samuel's family and the Sessions' family were close, judging from the names of their children. Both families have a Lydia, Patsy, Elizabeth, Lettice and Jeremiah.

Jeremiah Hargrave is in White Co., Ill by 1820. In 1870, Jeremiah is age 78 and living with a daughter, Harriet Moss, in Wayne Co., Ill. His son, Clinton, is also with them. Jeremiah died 9 Oct. 1871 at the home of D. A. Moss, his son-in-law. (I have more information on Jeremiah's family.) On Jeremiah's family group sheet it lists Alfred Hargrave. Now this may be a child of Jeremiah's, but in the following letter it would appear that Alfred is another one of Samuel's children. There were two Alfred Hargraves, one of them our grandfather's brother (Jeremiah) raised, the other I don't know about. I'm a little mixed up on him. He went to Texas. This other Alfred, our g. grandfather's brother, he settled north of Johnsonville where that Hargrave school house is.

This Alfred is in Wayne Co., Ill. He is buried in Johnsonville Cemetery in Wayne Co. with the dates 1812-1876. (I have more information on this Alfred's family.) Bennett is in White County, Ill. In 1820-1876, and is born about 1792. The reason I have considered Bennett as a possible child of Samuel is that one of Jeremiah's children named a a child, Bennett. These are the only two Bennett's I have come across.

Delila Hargrove's husband, Payton Brown, was born 1792 in Campbell Co., Va. and died 30 Oact. 1852, age 62, in Butler Co., Ky.

Clerimond's husband, Joel Berry, was born 1789 in Va., and died 12 Aug. 1876, age 87, of Cancaer in Butler Co., Ky. His parents are Joel and Sally Berry.

Also in Logan and Butler Counties at the same time Samuel was there is Joel, Robert and Joseph Hargrave. I cannot pin point all their children. Maybe some of the children I have 'given' to Samuel should belong to them. Also, there are some who need parents: Archibald Hargrove, age 20-30 in Wayne Co., Ill census; William Hargrove md. Viney Smith, 29 Oct. 1818 in White Co., Ill Joseph Hargroves md. Sally Whitney, 27 Nov. 1824 in Butler Co., Ky. (Sally, widow of Jo Hargroves md. Francis Eslick, 16 Apr. 1836. There would probably be more children to consider, but the marriage records for Butler Co., 1810-1814 are missing.

On 13 May 1811, Elizabeth Hargrave was sworn to give evidence to the grand jury. This Elizabeth could be the wife of Samuel, Joseph or Joel.

In Brunswick Co., NC, in the 1790 census, is a Samuel Hargroves with 1 male under 16 yrs., 5 females. I wonder if this is the Samuel of this article, since he is not listed there in the 1800 census?
