Meaning of terms

Shield divided horizontally, dividing line represents the battlements of towns or house for defense.
Gold metal indicated for upper part of shield.
Azure—deep heraldic blue, for lower part of shield, a symbol of truth.
Griffins, two on top, one below, an imaginary animal feigned by the ancients to be half an eagle, half lion, devised to express strength and swiftness joined together.
Heads erased means torn from the body, jagged.
Counter changed –intermixture of a metal and a color arranging that the charges placed upon the metal are of the color and vice versa.
The knight's helmet may be used in the emblazonement of arms by descendants of the person to whom the arms were granted in reward for heroic service. The surrounding scroll-work, called "mantting" represents the knight's mantle tattered in battle.
