THOMAS NELSON

Father of Henry Nelson


Thomas was born the 14th of January 1784 to Jane Burney and Richard Nelson in Morland, Westmoreland, England. His grandfather, Thomas Nelson, was the clerk of the Parish of Morland.

Thomas had three brothers and three sisters. Jane was born 14 August 1785, Wilford born 7 January 1787, he only lived until March of 1788; Mary born April 1790; Richard born 23 October 1792; Catherine born 1794 and died April 1795; Wilfred Christened 1 April 1797 and buried 7 May 1802.

On the 12th of February 1805, he married Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Thomas Thompson and Elizabeth Dobison Thompson. She was born 20 October 1786 in Wetheral, Cumberland, England.

This couple had nine children, all born in Morland, Westmoreland, England:

William born 2 January 1815
Richard born 2 July 1815 (?)
Henry born 23 July 1818 and buried 31 March 1821

Sometime around 1838, Thomas and his family migrated to America, settling in Cayuga Count, New York for one year. Around 1839 and 1840 four of the children, Jane, Henry, Isaac and William joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. When these children left for Nauvoo, Illinois to join the other members of the church, Thomas and the rest of his family went with them. Later he accompanied them when they started across the plains on their way to Utah. In August 1846, Thomas Nelson; died somewhere between Mount Pisgah and Soak Creek, Iowa. He never joined the church. After his death his temple work was done for him by his son, William, on 16 March 1886 in the Logan Temple.
